A Prime Source of Canine Overpopulation: The American Kennel Club

ISAR holds the AKC directly responsible for their role in the pet overpopulation crisis because this self-appointed promoter of purebreds encourages breeding. The AKC bolsters the puppy mill industry by issuing AKC registration papers to puppy mill dogs. This report also reveals the registry's questionable registration procedures and its connection to the many genetic diseases plaguing purebreds.

Solving Animal Behavior Problems

Animal shelters are full of healthy pets who were abandoned by their caretakers because of behavioral problems. By approaching behavioral problems as being both preventable and solvable, beloved animals can remain with their custodians and enrich their lives, rather than being dumped in shelters where they are destined to perish.

Dog and Cat Overpopulation

Are dogs and cats the nation's most popular animals? It doesn't seem so when millions of healthy dogs, cats, puppies and kittens are killed each year due to lack of responsible homes. This Report exposes the overpopulation crisis and presents an overview of its causes and its solutions.

Dog and Cat Overpopulation and Juvenile Spay/Neuter

While many veterinarians do not routinely perform early-age spay/neuters, there is apparently no reason not to. This Report discusses the early-age spay/neuter procedure, addresses concerns associated with it, and presents the many advantages of early-age spay/neuter.

High-Volume, Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinics

This Report provides guidance about how to establish a high-volume, low-cost spay/neuter clinic, which will combat pet overpopulation. The information was obtained through an interview ISAR conducted with Dr. W. Marvin Mackie, DVM, who founded and has headed four very successful spay/neuter clinics in Southern California.

Pet Identification and Overpopulation

This Report describes microchips and presents a brief overview of the many practical uses for this technological wonder, particularly as it relates to pet overpopulation. The Report discusses various types of chips and comes with information from the manufacturers of the types of chips distributed in the United States.

Pet Overpopulation Study

This Report presents a brief overview of an in-depth survey conducted several years ago by the Pecos People for Animal Welfare Society. It addresses various companion animal issues in rural New Mexico. By quantifying pertinent pet population statistics and identifying the reasons why people neglect to have their pets sterilized, the survey results can aid in planning and implementing effective spay/neuter campaigns. The survey results are available in their entirety in ISAR's Report entitled "Dog and Cat Survey."

Dog and Cat Survey

This 12-page study presents the complete findings of the pet overpopulation survey conducted by the Pecos People for Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), which addressed various companion animal issues in rural New Mexico. This highly informative survey yields some surprising results and provides valuable insight to those fighting the war on dog and cat overpopulation. By quantifying pertinent pet population statistics and identifying the reasons why people neglect to have their pets sterilized, the survey results can aid in planning and implementing effective spay/neuter campaigns.

Although the PAWS survey was conducted in a limited geographical area, the information can prove useful to those who may wish to assess the conditions and needs in their own communities. The study includes a copy of the survey, along with information on survey techniques, which will be particularly helpful for those who wish to undertake a similar study in their own area.

Organizing a Spay/Neuter Mobile

This Report presents an overview of the Pecos People for Animal Welfare Society's rural outreach program. The small group of dedicated volunteers transports rural cats and dogs to veterinary clinics for spaying and neutering. This program can serve as a blueprint for others who want to attack the overpopulation problem in a direct and relatively inexpensive manner.

Dog Overpopulation and Puppy Mills

This Report exposes the reader to the horrors of puppy mills and offers advice on how to stop these unscrupulous breeders who mass produce puppies. ISAR is working toward the total elimination of these deplorable animal factories and the prevention of the commercial retail sale of puppies.
